Skills Training for Emergency Preparedness

Skills Training for Emergency Preparedness (STEP), is an outdoor adventure course designed to build confidence in young ladies while preparing them to respond to life emergencies. Skills training will be coupled with a strong spiritual emphasis from the book of Philippians. This course will enrich each girl in personal disciplines, physical fitness, and confidence to face future crises.

STEP is held at the International ALERT Academy in Big Sandy, Texas, while the ALERT men are on furlough. Outdoor emergency training will include survival skills, rope work, canoeing, water safety, rappelling, and search-and-rescue. Students will also participate in training and certification in Basic First Aid and CPR. The home emergency skills’ training involves learning basic elements in the fields of medicine, plumbing, electrical, and auto maintenance, as well as finance.

“Time has flown since our journey began three weeks ago here at STEP. I have been spiritually and physically challenged, and my life has been eternally impacted by the lessons God has taught me through my group, the evening sessions, and through the practical hands-on classes. The unity of our leaders has been incredible and the bond of our group is impenetrable. I love each of my girls dearly and thank God for each one. Throughout the program I have been constantly reminded to rejoice and trust. Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.” Not just when things are going good, but always, even when life is dark. It is also a trust issue. God wants me to trust Him, especially in the trials of life. God knows what lies ahead and is working ALL things out for my good. (Romans 8:28) STEP is a program that I would encourage every girl to look in to. It will change their life.” —Haley C., STEP 2008 Participant
